Refurbished Numidians

I picked up a mixed lot of Numidians in bad shape in a job lot on TMP and brought them back to life. They were crushed and flattened, spears and shields bent and broken, etc... But I love a fixer-upper - the real draw in the lot was a large batch of Republican Romans still in blisters for a new project. That will be my 3rd 28mm Roman army ... yikes... but a period that has been on my bucket list in this scale.

Some Reaper Bones

Daughter #1 and I did some painting of some of the Bones range of minis over the long weekend. I like them - nice sculpts with lots of character. Lots of females too. From the left we have:

Mason Thornwarden, Ranger
Freja Fangbreaker, Dwarf Sergeant
Callie, Female Rogue with Bow
Juliette, Wizard
Female Viking
Female Dragon Slayer
Wall of Fire
Medium Fire Elemental

Revell Viking longship

And now for something a bit different - spent the weekend building this lovely 1/50 scale model of a Viking longship by Revell. Perfectly in scale for 28mm figures (shown on deck). I completed it as a display piece rather than for gamine - I think you would want to waterline it or beach it for gaming. That would be out of the range of my very limited modelling skills!

More Armenians

Another batch of Crusade-era Armenians from Perry. This time I have a unit of armoured foot bearing a very Christian-themed shield design, and a second unit of militia types with a mixed array of Eastern and Christian shield themes. This time I did the shield transfers before painting the figures, normally I try to match the shield transfer to the colour theme I used for each figure. I think it works, although one wonders whether warriors of the Crusades had that kind of fashion sense.

Unboxing KR Multicase foam trays

I have been pondering storage solutions for my increasing pile of painted 28mm lead in particular. I took the plunge and ordered KR multicase foam trays - enticed by their worldwide free postage and low cost relative to GW. I ordered two products - one a set of 8 trays with 25 25mm x 35mm cells - enough for 200 foot, and one set of 8 trays with 20 25mm x 45mm cells, which I plan to use for mounted by removed the foam between two cells - so enough to hold 40 mounted troops.

Total all in was 65USD - about the same price as the GW small figure case which holds 108 figs. The GW foam trays are higher density and cost $25 for 108 figs - roughly $0.23 per cell. The KR products I chose hold 360 figs for $65, or about $0.18 per cell. Roughly 25% cheaper. The lower density foam might offer slightly less sturdy protection, but it is also gentler on your figures. Call it even.

Shipping took about 1 week. Good deal overall I think!

Armenian warriors

Armenians by Perry - for my Crusader warband for Saga. Shield transfers are for Sassanids while the banner is Byzantine. I thought it suited warriors from a Christian kingdom very influenced by the East.

Byzantine cavalry for Saga

To make up the balance of my 6 point Byzantine warband for Saga here are the hearthguard Kavallroi - a double size unit of lancers and a supporting unit of archers. Lancers are Old Glory cataphracts and the archers are Foundry Late Romans. LBM buckler transfers.
