Casualty markers and Hannibal's veterans

I painted 8 stands of Carthaginian veterans for the Punic Wars project, and also dabbled with some ideas for casualty markers for Sword and Spear and perhaps other games.

The circle and square are the same idea - use numbers like a dial to record hits or strength remaining, the color coding dot could be used to signify heavy / medium / lights in Command and Colors. Shown here beside some 1/72 hoplites.

Not sure which I like better - need to use larger lettraset characters on the round one.

I also considered using the marker as a dice caddy for Sword and Spear to mark both hits and activation dice status.

Then I noticed that bits of plywood leftover between the round bases were a nice star shaped - so I painted them red and put a number on them - presto casualty markers, shown here alongside just completed Gripping Beast 28mm African spearmen

And here around 3 bases of Hannibals veterans converted from Wargames Factory Caesarian legionnaires.

I'm leaning towards the red markers - any thoughts?

Ancient Spanish

The Punic Wars project progresses - here we have the Spanish contingent which also has enough elements to make up a DBA Ancient Spanish army. The figs are mainly Gripping Beast with some Wargames Factory slingers serving as Balearics.

Early Imperial Romans

The core of my Early Imperial Roman army in 28mm is now complete. Auxilia, Praetorians, legion and Emperor Augustus are all Warlord figures. For enemies I have Dacians, Germans, Picts and Sassanids in progress. But I now turn my attention to the Punic era

Warlord Early Imperial Romans

This is the last box of Imperial Legionnaires from Warlord and finishes my EIR army in 28mm. I'll assemble all of it for pics in the next week or so.

Here we have 11 bases of regular old legion including an extra command stand. I think they look spiff - now if I can only settle on a ruleset I like for them. I have ample colourful enemies for them, including Picts, Gauls and a Sassanid army in progress.

Refurbished Numidians

I picked up a mixed lot of Numidians in bad shape in a job lot on TMP and brought them back to life. They were crushed and flattened, spears and shields bent and broken, etc... But I love a fixer-upper - the real draw in the lot was a large batch of Republican Romans still in blisters for a new project. That will be my 3rd 28mm Roman army ... yikes... but a period that has been on my bucket list in this scale.

Revell Viking longship

And now for something a bit different - spent the weekend building this lovely 1/50 scale model of a Viking longship by Revell. Perfectly in scale for 28mm figures (shown on deck). I completed it as a display piece rather than for gamine - I think you would want to waterline it or beach it for gaming. That would be out of the range of my very limited modelling skills!
