Western Desert microarmour

I've had a lot of refurbished microarmour sitting by my bench for months - well I decided to get it done.

Here is a whack of Bishop SP guns, Shermans, Matildas and some Stuarts that I picked up in a big job lot. I stripped them all and repainted them in a very light stone with faded caunter on the Stuarts.

I am also doing some infantry and couldn't decide whether to do classic faded khaki-beige or wool uniform. So there are a couple of test stands in the pictures. What do you think?

M1 Abrams and Austrians!

In typical Dave fashion, this week I have different scales and completely different genres.

First we have 4 battalions of Austrian 10mm Napoleonic infantry. These are Old Glory 10mm strips (which I love) that I picked up in a lot on Bartertown. Now I need some wee eagle transfers for the flags - the only ones I can think of would be shield transfers from VVV. If anyone has a better idea, please let me know!

Then I have 14 M1 tanks recently refitted after soaking in oven cleaner for a week to bring them down to bare metal. Again - a job lot from TMP this time. They have a date with destiny in a Team Yankee scenario I have in mind.

PS- is anybody out there anymore?

Sassanid commanders and some more modern microarmour

I have now completed my Sassanid army with these two command stands - very handsome fellas if I do say so myself. Also, I competed some more modern microarmour for Team Yankee. These are by CinC and include some Bradleys in forest green (new to theatre for mid 80s), M113s in MERDC camo, Soviet BMP-1s and some lovely BM-21s - capable of laying down some serious hurt from a distance!

Team Yankee in 1/285

Over the holidays I picked up a copy of the new Team Yankee rulebook from Battlefront. For those who don't know, this is the Cold War version of Flames of War intended for their own range of 15mm stuff, but in my opinion, vastly better suited for microarmour in terms of ground scale. I always wanted to like Flames of War because of the range of models, production value and popularity, but the rules always put me off for being clunky and full of special national characteristic rules which to me is just bad design. Team Yankee is a vast improvement on the FOW engine - it's considerably streamlined, sensible, has few special rules and exceptions, and might actually look like okay with 1/285 models in terms of ground scale.

So it has inspired me to paint up more modern microarmour, the game is set in 1985 when M1 Abrams tanks just arrived in Europe, historically painted in forest green at a time when most of the kit like M1092, M113s etc.. in theatre was still MERDC camo and prior to the transition to Nato tricolour:

Bit of this and that

This week I worked on some fantasy stuff that was hiding in the cupboard and some modern Soviet microarmour that I obtained in a swap and have been restoring. I added some GW high elves to my army in anticipation of trying out Kings of War next week:

A lovely Citadel dragon that might feature in my Elven army:

I even found this weird wizard drgon rider dude - I think he was by Grenadier and came with an undead dragon I painted some time ago

And BTR-80s, BMPs, T-80s and some mobile artillery:

Modern microarnour: Bundeswehr 1985

I finished some modern GHQ and CinC microarmour for a game I want to run on Tuesday using the Epic rules modified for early Cold War. Here we have Lep Is, Luchs, Raketepanzers and some infantry fireteams.

Modern microarmour and Battle of Five Armies

I just finished working up a bunch of modern microarmour to play a 1985 Cold War scenario using an adaptation of the Epic Armageddon rules by GW. I have played Epic once and thought it was a lot of fun, I actually think it is a great ruleset for adaptation to moderns. So here we have:

A company of T-62s by GHQ

BTR60s, BRDMs and artillery (CinC and GHQ)

Infantry and support weapons (GHQ)

Hind D (CinC)

An Airfix 1/76 Sdkfz222 for next weeks game of Chain of Command

And also, one of my chums requested that I post some pictures of my Battle of Five Armies 10mm stuff by GW. I painted these 10 years ago when the GW box game was released as part of their Specialist Games range (all of which I think were fantastic, such a shame they killed them all).

Beorn, Thorin's gang, eagles and Gandolf:

 Wargs and warg-riders:
